  • Examining Migration Dynamics : Networks and Beyond (24-26 septembre 2013)

    "Why do some migrants set off the movement of thousands of people, while others are followed only by a few, or remain virtually alone in the destination country ? Some answers can be found in the variation in economic and social conditions in different places. Another vital part of the puzzle relates to the historical, social and cultural practices of migration : those who move now are following in the footsteps of those who left before. This conference examines how enduring patterns of migration emerge, are sustained and decline ; the mechanisms by which the migration processes of yesterday influence those of today ; and the
    role of the migrant as a social actor in the face of these historical and social processes."

    « For a large part of humanity, the last decades have brought an unprecedented increase in healthy life expectancy. This raises questions about how the longer life expectancy has been shaped by and will shape individual behaviour over the life cycle. Although a welcome development, the increase in life expectancy poses policy challenges for social security and the cohesion of society given that social groups benefit from a longer life to a varying extent. This conference invites researchers from all social sciences to present work on the individual and social causes and consequences of a prolonged life cycle at both the micro and macro levels. Empirical and theoretical papers as well as overviews are welcome. »

Remaining mindful of the blurred boundaries and frequent areas of overlap between â ?ËÅ ?anthropogenic’ and â ?ËÅ ?natural’ disasters in urban contexts, we take â ?ËÅ ?disaster’ to denote any event that causes widespread destruction. Our central concern is with how the structures and processes of urban governance are working to develop more effective and inclusive initiatives to manage and prevent these large-scale destructive events. »

  • La jeunesse malienne : entre autonomie, mobilisation et exclusion (12-15 juin 2013)

    « Ce colloque cherche à interroger ces mutations profondes au sein de la jeunesse malienne, celle vivant en France, au Mali et dans d’autres pays. Contrairement à une vision erronée, l’année 2012 au Mali, malgré les événements de décembre, ne marque pas une rupture historique : elle constitue un prolongement d’un mouvement amorcé antérieurement. Du point de vue de la jeunesse, il s’agit de s’interroger sur le rôle des transformations vis-à-vis de l’autorité, et de comprendre le rôle de celle-ci dans des mouvements qui se veulent contestataires. Un des thèmes central de ce colloque est d’analyser les mouvements de la jeunesse malienne afin de comprendre comment les mutations sociales bouleversent le rôle et la place de la jeunesse de façon historique. »

    Les propositions de communication s’inscriront dans les quatre axes de réflexions suivantes :
    - Axe 1 : Jeunesse et migration
    - Axe 2 : Jeunesse et formation
    - Axe 3 : Jeunesse et insertion socioprofessionnelle
    - Axe 4 : Jeunesse et participation politique.

    À l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de la démographie à l’UCL, la Chaire Quételet 2013 portera sur l’évolution de la démographie au cours des 50 dernières années et des 50 années à venir. Cette Chaire sera l’occasion de faire un bilan critique sur les outils, thématiques, et paradigmes de notre discipline en revisitant le passé récent, mais aussi de penser ou imaginer le futur, de façon raisonnable ou pourquoi pas, utopique.

    Les communications porteront sur les transformations (passées ou à venir) de la discipline et des enjeux démographiques et toucheront aux thèmes suivants :

    - Les théories et les paradigmes (utilité, pertinence, manque/trop-plein... ?)
    - La science démographique dans les sciences sociales et de santé (isolement/intégration, forces/faiblesses... ?)
    - Les systèmes d’information (recensements, enquêtes, registres...)
    - Les méthodes et outils (quantitatifs, qualitatifs, et mixtes)
    - Les politiques démographiques (utilité, efficacité... ?)
    - L’enseignement de la démographie (quoi, comment, pour qui ?)
    - L’évolution de long terme des phénomènes démographiques (erreurs, incertitudes, retournements...)
    - Les utopies et les illusions démographiques.

    We are seeking a creative and independent Research Assistant/Fellow to join a Wellcome Trust-funded partnership between the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies and the University of Southampton to enhance research and training in population health. The postdoctoral researcher will join colleagues in the School of Social Science and the Faculty of Medicine with long-standing and internationally recognised records of research in South Africa. She/he will have a key role in conducting and developing new demographic research projects and training.     Research Assistant/Fellow (Quote reference:220413CC)

    Our multidisciplinary team is seeking a social scientist will strong quantitative skills as well as, an interest in conducting primary data collection, to join us in working on an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project to improve the measurement of family indicators associated with child health and well-being in population-based studies in sub-Saharan Africa. The project focuses on methods of longitudinal analyses and collecting information from and about non-resident parents, non-parental caregiving and children who migrate. The collaborative project involves two UK academic institutions : the University of Southampton and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the Wellcome Trust-funded Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies in South Africa. The postdoctoral research will conduct analyses of existing longitudinal data collected in the Africa Centre Demographic Information System (www.africacentre.ac.za) ; be responsible for developing and managing a new family health survey ; and, analyses of survey data using structural equation modelling methods."

    L’Institut national d’études démographiques recrute par voie de concours des chercheurs de niveau doctoral pour une période d’un an à trois ans :
    - 6 allocations doctorales d’une durée de 2 à 3 ans
    (réservées aux doctorants inscrits en 1re ou 2e année de thèse à la rentrée 2013)
    - 6 allocations doctorales d’un an non renouvelable (réservées
    aux doctorants inscrits en 4e année à la rentrée 2013)
    - 1 ou 2 bourses d’un an non renouvelable pour des doctorants inscrits dans une université étrangère.

    Conditions d’éligibilité

    Être titulaire ou en cours d’obtention d’un Master ou diplôme permettant l’inscription dans une école doctorale.

    Être déjà inscrit en thèse. L’Ined accepte la candidature d’étudiants ayant déjà débuté leur doctorat

    Aucune condition de nationalité. Les candidats peuvent être inscrits dans une formation doctorale en France ou à l’étranger. La maîtrise de la langue française n’est pas requise au moment du recrutement, mais elle facilite l’insertion dans l’Institut.
