Résumé
What is and what will be a hospital in the next decades ? Why should we care about its future ? What concerns, strategies and societal insights should guide the way we debate about their future ? What would be the implications of choosing to centre being human and dignity in health care provision ? How to both pluriverse (Escobar, 2018) the hospital horizons and produce more transferable or appropriable knowledge and experiences ? In working around these issues, we will mobilize feminist epistemologies as well as map and struggle against epistemic injustices.
Highly technoscientific promises weigh heavily in future projections, with digitalization and AI solutions as the new salvation of the African continent. We argue that the definition of the “hospital of the future”, particularly in the Global South, cannot be left solely to the speculations of international consulting firms, which dominate the narrative of digital salvation and AI-driven individualized precision medicine. This is an important issue for the humanities, philosophy, history, and anthropology, which have a long experience of working in and about hospitals and within pluridisciplinary oriented epidemiological and public health projects. It requires collective, borderless and interdisciplinary research work. We will consider the hospital as a place from which to think through the implications of futuristic technologies – in this case AI – in the African context, their impact on modes of being, and their articulations with low-tech interventions into social problems. We will combine epistemic questions and seek methodological options for future collaborative and publicly engaged projects.
The future of hospitals is a collaborative research program between Ceped and HUMA, the Institute for the Humanities in Africa at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, with funding from the PHC PROTEA (Partenariat Hubert Curien-NRF South Africa) and from GRIP the Global Research institute of Paris, Université Paris Cité and with a growing networks of researchers and practitioners involved.
