Domaine d’intervention
Catherine Pirkle is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and an invited researcher in global health at Ceped. Trained in both epidemiology and community health, she has done extensive work globally focusing on women’s health across the life-course. This work has encompassed deep examinations of the influences of health systems and quality of care during pregnancy and the perinatal period on women’s immediate and long-term health outcomes. Dr. Pirkle has a deep interest in how milestones in women’s reproductive years, such as age at first childbirth, number of children, and menopause, may contribute to the development of chronic conditions and mobility disability during middle-age and later life. Her early work in maternal and child health led a secondary line of research focused on sources of exposure to environmental contaminants in wild foods, especially fish, and messaging about the risks and benefits of consuming these foods during pregnancy. Her research on environmental contaminants expanded to a broader focus on oceans and human health inclusive of considerations of fishing practices and food security, safety concerns related marine animals, and the health benefits, such as physical activity, associated with engaging with marine environments. She has conducted research on these topics across the globe including in West Africa (Mali, Senegal), Oceania (Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of the Philippines), Latin America (Brazil, Colombia), and Europe (Albania), as well as in Canada and the United States. Dr. Pirkle is also the owner of Pirkle Epidemiology and Evaluation Consulting, LLC.
